Importance of Information Therapy:

Some important points brought out in the 3rd pre-conference seminar were:

1. Some patients want information about their medical problems from their doctor – not from a para medical support.
2. Providing information ensures patient safety resulting in happier patients.
3. Information should be decision focussed, evidence-based and researched.
4. Information makes a patient aware of different treatment options available.

Satyajit Patwardhan

Some important points brought out in the 3rd pre-conference seminar were:

Patient expectations and the reality:

1. Patients expectations need to be expressed. They should be given a chance to express expectations.
2. Doctors should tell patients about his limitations and treatment limitations.

Medical Counselling Redefined…the way out of the maze

1. Discuss the medical condition face to face with the patients
2. Doctor and Patient should reach a unanimous decision about treatment
3. There is a need for a Medical Counsellor to interact with the patients. There is a need to appoint a medical counselor in each department of a hospital.
4. Junior doctors should be available to fulfil this responsibility as they are more accessible. Inter-acting with a patient can help them become better doctors.
5. The patients should ask to meet a medical counsellor.

Dr.Raghav Arora

Legal Rights of the Patient:

1. The hospital should provide a trusted database of all medical conditions.
2. The database should be based on the hospital’s experience with the medical conditions about its patients.
3. Other hospitals could share information from their database.
4. Legal rights of the patients were read out.
