The Reasons, benefits and drawbacks of seeking a Second Medical Opinion

Lots of people want another view of their condition, and they are entitled to one. But before we begin the process we fail to step back and think about whether getting a second opinion is really necessary. Second opinions often differ but none of them may be necessarily wrong. Having a word with another doctor may dissipate a few fears, but on the other hand it may also give rise to other irrationalities.As a medical student who has often experienced doctors offering primary and secondary medical advice in the Out Patient Departments, Jhanvi Bajaj would like to offer her views over this aspect of patient care.

Jhanvi S. Bajaj is a 7th semester MBBS student from Seth G. S. Medical College & K. E. M. Hospital, Mumbai. She has initiated and participated in various research projects and presented her work at several conferences including an international medical conference at Washington DC. She has also secured 3rd place at the worldwide poster presentation competition held at thos conference.She is a winner of the prestigious Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana scholarship sponsored by the Department pf Science and Technology, India. She has secured distinctions in both, the HSC as well as the SSC examinations conducted by the Maharashtra State Board, which she gave from The D.G. Ruparel College & Loreto Convent School, Mumbai, respectively. She enjoys reading both fiction and non-fiction works and her favourite authors are Amitav Ghosh and Cecelia Ahern. She also writes poems, songs and short stories as a hobby.
Jhanvi also interns with America Online for an online magazine. She also participates in cultural activities and has been an organizer for the annual college festival ‘Aavishkaar’.
